U.S. Coast Guard  And The STCW Requirements For Original Mate (OICNW) 500GRT; 1600GRT/3000GT & 3rd Mate Unlimited Near Coastal Or Oceans

Sea Service Requirements: (Recency requirement is 90 days of sea service in past 3 years on vessels of appropriate tonnage)

Mate 500GRT Near Coastal Waters: 720 (8-hour) days of qualifying service on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, OF WHICH: 360 days must be on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, AND 360 days of service on vessels over 100GRT, AND 90 days of service as AB, Boatswain, Quartermaster or equivalent position on vessels over 50GRT while holding certification as AB.

MATE 500GRT Upon Oceans Waters: 720 (8-hour) days of qualifying service on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, OF WHICH: 360 days must be on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, AND 360 days of service as Master, Mate, or equivalent supervisory position while holding an Officer endorsement as Master, Mate, or OUPV, AND 180 days of service as Master, Mate, or equivalent supervisory position on vessels over 50GRT.

MATE 1600GRT Near Coastal Waters: 720 (8-hour) days of qualifying service on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, OF WHICH: 360 days must be on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, AND 360 days of service on vessels over 100GRT, AND 180 days of service as AB, Boatswain, Quartermaster or equivalent position on vessels over 100GRT while holding certification as AB.

MATE 1600GRT Upon Oceans Waters: 1080 (8-hour) days of qualifying service on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, OF WHICH: 540 days must be on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, AND 360 days of service on vessels over 100GRT, AND 360 days of service as Master, Mate, or equivalent supervisory position while holding an Officer endorsement as Master, Mate, or Master/Mate of Towing Vessels, AND 180 days of service as Master, Mate, or equivalent supervisory position on vessels over 100GRT;

OR: 1080 days of service on Ocean or Near Coastal vessels over 200GRT, AND 180 days of service as AB.

Third (3rd) Mate AGT Upon Oceans or Near Coastal Waters (Non-Maritime Academy Graduate): 1080 (8-hour) days of qualifying service on Oceans/Near Coastal waters, OF WHICH: 180 days as AB, Boatswain, or Quartermaster, (while holding AB), 90 days of engine department service may be credible, OR  360 days of service as Master on vessels over 200GRT upon Oceans/Near Coastal waters while holding an Officer endorsement as Master (Sail/Motor) 1600GRT Oceans/Near Coastal,

All required service must be on vessels over 200GRT, AND 50% of the required service must be on vessels over 1600GRT:

  • Tonnage Limitation may be issued if 50% of service is not on vessels over 1600GRT (All service must still be on vessels over 200GRT)
  • Limited to maximum tonnage on which 25% of experience is obtained, OR limited to 150% tonnage which 50% of service was obtained, WHICHEVER IS GREATER

Prerequisite Training:

  1. Basic Safety Training
  2. Proficiency in Survival Craft/Lifeboatman
  3. RFPNW & Able Seaman

Practical Assessments:
