U.S. COAST GUARD & STCW REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ORIGINAL OR UPGRADE TO MASTER 500 GRT; 1600 GRT/3000GT NEAR COASTAL OR OCEANS

NOTE: These are the Coast Guard requirements as we know them to be right now.  The below requirements for complying with STCW-95 for Master 500GRT are subject to change upon the Coast Guard publishing their final requirements for compliance with the STCW 2010 Amendments and the STCW Code 2011 Edition.

NMC Evaluator checklist: Master 500/1600GRT Near Coastal or Oceans

Master 500GRT Sea Service Requirements

1080 minimum total career days including: 540 days on near coastal or oceans routes; 720 days as OICNW or Master while holding a license; 360 days of licensed service on a vessel over 50GRT; 90 days in the last three years on a vessel of at least 50GRT.

Master 1600GRT/3000GT Sea Service Requirements

1440 minimum total career days including:  720 days on near coastal or oceans routes;  720 days as OICNW or Master while holding a license; 720 days of service on a vessel over 100GRT (at least 1/2 with a license); 90 days in the last three years on a vessel of at least 100GRT.

Practical Assessments

“RFPNW Assessments” (if you do not already hold an AB) NOTE: For Master 500/1600GRT Near Coastal licenses, you may be required by the NMC to submit the OICNW proficiency assessment “Control Sheets” signed off by a Qualified Assessor in lieu of the “Master Level Control Sheets,” which are still currently pending.
