QUALMI-515: Terrestrial Navigation OICNW STCW Code 2011 Edition Approved!

COURSE LENGTH: 40 HOURS (5 DAYS)

Course Description:

Successful completion of this training satisfies the Terrestrial Navigation training requirements in Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code, As Amended 2010 for certification as Officer in Charge of the Navigational Watch (OICNW) on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC), provided that you have also completed our 40-Hour Coastal Navigation course within 12 months of the completion of this course. This 5-day (40-hour) course will prepare students for the exam module in terrestrial navigation administered to applicants for Mate/Master 500/1600 GRT, and Third Mate AGT.  This training program places a heavy emphasis on theoretical and practical knowledge of topics including:

  • Navigational Compasses and Compass Deviation Table Construction; Zone Time/GMT Calculations and Chronometer Time/Error; Set and Drift by Terrestrial Observations; Course in a Current; Electronic Navigation; Terrestrial Observations; Tides and Currents; Fuel Consumption and Speed by RPM; Compass Error by Azimuth and Amplitude; and True & Apparent Wind

Examination: One written examination consisting of 25 multiple choice questions is administered at the end of the course that requires a minimum passing score of 88%.

NOTE: There is one OICNW Assessment “Control Sheet” actually applicable to the KUP for Magnetic and Gyro Compass.  Task: Azimuth of the Sun, which must be signed off onboard ship by a qualified assessor: Control Sheet OICNW-1-5F. All other OICNW assessments applicable to Coastal/Terestrial Navigation, Magnetic & Gyro Compass are satisfied by completion of our approved course modules Coastal Navigation, Terrestrial Navigation and Magnetic & Gyro Compasses.
